The name was applied by mistake to the wrong feature in 1957. The glacier described by this name (Provisional Gazetteer of the Ross Dependency 1958, p 156) is a very minor feature, and no name is proposed for it. A descriptive name applied by the NZTAE, 1956-58, to this feaure, referring to an incident in January 1957 when an aircraft attempted to land on the exceedingly broken ice at the foot of the glacier.
