It stands relatively little above the ice surface on the west, but downstream, on the east side, has towering black cliffs which make it a prominent landmark from the sea-ice north of the Nordenskjold Ice Tongue, some 50 miles to the north-east. Named by the Northern Survey Party of the NZTAE, 1956-58, because of its three summits. They established a survey station on its summit on 9 December 1957.
