AddBy: Kathleen Palmer22nd Mar 2015 10:30PMThis is the occasion on the 25th Anniversary of the opening of Scott Base. I being the youngest person on the base on 20 January 1982 had the honour of raising the new flag. Sir Ed talked about not knowing how to put up a flag - he seemed very non-plussed about the ceremony which found favour with me. Rob Thompson, Robert Muldoon PM, United States Science Foundation VIP and a priest gave speeches. The New Zealand Army were impressive with their shirt sleeves folded up. Sir Ed got the flag down easily - you can see it folded under his hands. For me, after getting the new flag toggled up, I pulled the halyard which was flapping in the wind, near the top rubber band shot off the folded flag which then caught in a stay and stuck - this will do I told Keith Clegg (Orange Jacket). Later that afternoon, I had to go out with Sir Ed to re-raise the flag so that the Japanese film crew could film it.
