Its bluff-like eastern side is bounded by the Starshot Glacier. It was mapped from air photographs taken by the US Navy and named by US-ACAN after Cdr. George R. Kelly, USN commanding officer of USN Squadron VX-6 during Operation Deepfreeze 1964.
