The islands were discovered on 9 February 1839 by Captain John Balleny of the Eliza Scott, one of Enderby's captains who had been sent out on an exploring mission. The islands were named in his honour by Captain Beaufort, hydrographer to the Admiralty. The islands include Sturge (the largest), Young, Buckle, Rowe, and Borradaile Islands, and Sabrina Islet.
