Discovered on 9 February 1839 by Balleny, and named by him for J W Buckle, one of the seven London merchants who joined with Charles Enderby in sending out the expedition. The island, which has precipitous coasts, rises to a height of 740 m, and Balleny reported it to be an active volcano, but no signs of volcanic activity were seen in 1904,1936 and 1938.
