Discovered and named on 18 February 1841 by Ross for Captain Washington, RN, who was Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society from 1836 to 1840. Washington took an active part in agitating for an expedition to the Antarctic, and he stressed the suitability of Captain James Clark Ross for the leadership of such an expedition.
