Discovered by the Byrd AE, 1928-30. When flying over it on 15 January 1929, Byrd found that the compasses swung badly, recalling similar trouble that Clarence Chamberlain encountered on his flight to Germany, hence the name. This feature probably no longer exists because of the profound changes which have taken place in this area.
