Named for Rear Admiral George J Dufek, USN, who served under Rear Admiral Richard E Byrd in the 1939-41, United States Antarctic Service Expedition, and who was selected as commander of the Eastern Task Force of United States Navy Operation "Highjump", 1946-47. He was appointed as Commander US Naval Support Force Antarctica, or Operation Deep Freeze, in August 1954, and during the TAE, 1956-58, he gave all the support within his power to the New Zealand Party. A support station was set up in this region by Rear Admiral Dufek to assist in the flights to the South Pole Station.
