A survey station was established on this point by US Navy Hydrographic Office survey team in Deep Freeze I, and called by them "Station Route". It is fairly certain that this designation was taken from the BAE 1910-13 map of Hut Point Peninsula, as in this locality was written "Route to Cape Evans". Named by A J Heine of the McMurdo Ice Shelf Project, 1962-63, for M R J Ford, the New Zealand surveyor who was responsible for establishing the survey beacon network for the McMurdo Ice Shelf Project, 1962-63.
