In its upper reaches there are extensive ice falls and cascades, and a few miles above them there is an easy pass to the Aviator Glacier. It is possible that the pass is a diffluence through which some ice from the Aviator Glacier passes to the Icebreaker Glacier. Close to its mouth this glacier is joined by the Benefactor Glacier. A shorter and narrower valley glacier separates the work of the complements of the US Navy and US coastguard ice-breakers in Antarctic exploration, in supporting scientists and in aiding other shipping.
