First explored by the Northern Party, led by Campbell, of the BAE, 1910-13, which gave it the name of Southern Foothills in contradistinction to the Northern Foothills to the north-east. In February 1912, when the party moved their camp to this island, they changed the name to Inexpressible Island. Here they spent a very unpleasant winter on half rations in a cave in a snowdrift. Not Oscar Island or Southern Foothills.
