Discovered by the NAE, 1901-04. Named by Scott for Capt C A Larsen, of the whaler Jason, who had explored the Antarctic ten years earlier. Larsen also commanded the 13,000 ton whaling factory ship Sir James Clark Ross, which visited the Ross Sea on a whaling venture in 1923-24.
