The contermporary end-moraines of the Mt Bird ice cap in this district contain abundant fragments of marine shells, ploughed from the floor of McMurdo Sound and deposited at heights of 600m or more on the western slopes of Mt Bird by greatly expanded glaciers of a Quaternary glacial period. Named because of the shell content of the moraines by the NZGSAE, 1958-59.
