It is very prominent from Hallett Station. Named by the NZGSAE, 1957-58, for Dr J Tur, of Puerto Rico, surgeon and US Navy Leader at Hallett Station in 1957, the first year of its operation. Shear Cliff on its southern side is named for his colleague, the scientific leader at the station in 1957.
