Mt Erebus disaster: plane crash 28 November 1979: Air New Zealand Flight TE901: DC-10. Dr Katsu Kaminuma from the National Institute of Polar Research, Japan, a guest scientist with the NZ Antarctic Research Programme, sprinkles sake on the memorial cross before burying at its base a scroll listing names of Japanese who died. Cross is located on Te Puna Roimata Peak 77°; 27'S 167°; 34' E is a peak (c.890 m) located 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 km) west of Terra Nova Glacier and 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) south of Lewis Bay on the lower northeast slope of Mount Erebus, Ross Island.
