On 27th April Dr Bridgeman, four Navy personnel and Brian Reid set off man-hauling banana sleds to visit Felsite Island, which NZ Geological Survey had noted as being a 'Bird Rookery'. Though all birds had departed the area by this date it was hoped to acertain species and population by guano deposits and skeletal remains, and decide whether this area would be worth camping at next summer for bird studies. Meterorological observations were to be made and if possible measurements were to be made of the snpw poles placed on Hallett Glacier by the N.Z. Geological Survey. After one night during which the temperature dropped to -30°F, it was decided to return to camp as we were not adequately equipped, only having 1 Blanchard (2 man) tent and also the fuel would not vapourise and burn in the petrol stove.
