Eric Spurr finished his field work of the study on the dispersion mechanisms| mainly antagonistic behaviour of the Adelie, and David Smith began field work on population numbers in relation to seasonal climatic factors in the collembolan Gomphiocephalus, carrying on from work done by Peterson two seasons earlier. The marine programme of Peter Kettle looked into the possibility of running a comprehensive marine study in the future and examined the usefulness of various plankton collecting aparatus available in Antarctic conditions.
