DescriptionFive years ago Sir Edmund Hillary left his tractor "Sue' 'tilted over like a hip-shot horse'| he wrote. Today 'Sue is at Scott Base and once more working for New Zealand in Antarctica. 'Sue' stayed at the pole Station with United States scientists and servicemen until last summer when she was flown out to McMurdo Sound and Scott Base. Her Latest task has been to supply emergency spare parts - a less romantic role than pulling a sledge 1250 miles accross snow and ice to be one of the first vehicles to reach the pole| but a vital one. Without 'Sues' spares SCott Base tractor and sledge trains could not have kept running to unload the ships which have brought New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme stores to the ice this summer. First she lost her tracks| then her front wheels| then other| smailler bits and pieces. So here sits 'Sue'| coated with drift snow after a Scott Base blizzard. Five years of Antarctic weather have had little effect on her because teh climate is si dry. When tractor spares arrive from New Zealand her parts will be restored. A few hous work and she will be running again. |PhotographerGuy ManneringUnknownOriginalPrintLocationScott Base
