DescriptionFirst Thai Royal Visit to Antarctica| Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand arrived in Antarctica on Friday (19 November 1993) for a four day visit to Scott Base and the New Zealand Antarctic Programme. (NZARP) Accomapnaied by Police General Serm Charuratana and Eden MP Christine Fletcher| the Princess was put through a field training course on basic field techniques| including walking on snow and ice crampons| and roping up for travelling on crevasse fields| on her first day. Travelling from 35 degree C heat to sub-zero temperature was just one of the challenges she faced. 'Everybody who has known me since I was small knows my horror of cold weather| but I have a very special feeling coming here.' Said Princess Sirindhorn. 'It will be very difficult to describe this place to the people of Thailand. Many think of this place as being only ice| but there is so much more here.' Her Royal highness also visited Shackleton's hut at Cape Royds| neighbouring Adelie penguin rookery| and Scott's hut at Cape Evans. The Princess| who has several degrees| spent time with several scientists working in the Ross Dependency| gathering facts about unusual Antarctic fish and ozone depletion| Weddell seals and the Dry Valleys for a book she will write about her trip. 'What I will remember from this experience will be the friendly people at Scott Base and how they help each other and share their knowledge.'
