Webster from St Judes Hospital| Memphis| Tennessee will be collecting blood and nasal samples from Weddell Seals| Adelie penguins and skuas near Scott Base and at Cape Bird in an attempt to obtain more information on the extent to which influenza viruses occur in isolated areas with limited mammal and bird life. Laboratory tests will be conducted on the samples in New Zealand for viruses and antibodies and the results forwarded to the World Health Organisation which maintains a continuing interest in the relationship between human and animal virus influenza strains.
