Auckland Domestic Airport loader Darryn Bennett and Christchurch engineer Ash Cotter have flown out to Antarctica after two weeks of vigorous training with Antarctica New Zealand.
They were put through their paces to make sure they are prepared for their secondments in the coldest, driest, windiest and iciest continent on earth.
The first week of training covered safety, teamwork, environmental protection and sustainability in Antarctica. During the second week they faced the inferno in an intense course of fire training to make sure they are fully prepared for any situation.
“To sum it up, this would have been the most mentally and physically intense week of training I have ever experienced,” says Darryn.
After waiting in anticipation for the experience of a lifetime, they are now in Antarctica familiarising themselves with life on the base.
