Targeted observation and process informed modelling of Antarctic sea ice.
We want to better understand the influence of ice shelves on sea ice formation and persistence. To achieve this, we will map snow and sea ice thickness in the western Ross Sea from the air using an electromagnetic device (the EM Bird) slung below a DC3 aircraft. We will also be taking measurements from the surface of the ice using a similar device towed by skidoo. In collaboration with a 2017 US icebreaker cruise, these observations will contribute to a new sea ice module within the New Zealand Earth System Model.
