NIWA have made atmospheric measurements at Arrival Heights (5 km from Scott Base) since 1982. They monitor the changes and trends in greenhouse gases and the evolution of the ozone hole (and the gases that destroy ozone). The ozone hole and greenhouse gases are significant factors in climate change and have an associated impact on New Zealand climate, UV radiation levels and extreme weather events. The measurements made at Arrival Heights are in a data-sparse region of the globe and are a critical component in many atmospheric global networks.
