(Scott's Last Expedition) returned to Antarctica almost 50 years since his last arrival. Sir Charles was with the Pacific Naval Research Laboratory of the Canadian Defence Research Board at the time this photo was taken Dec 17 1960. The 73yr old physicist was there as a part of a cooperative programme with the Radio Science Laboratory| Stanford Eectronics Laboratories| Stanford| California. These laboratories were conducting research in ionospheric physics under a grant from teh National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Research Programme. Sir Charles| together with Mr Donald J Evans| also from Canada| then went to Cape Evans for six weeks to measure micro pulsations form .2 to 30 cycles per second in the earth's magnetic field. The hut at Cape evans is the one he lived in as a member of Scott's expedition. Sir Charles and Leslie B Quartermain in Herbert Ponting's darkroom in the old hut at Cape Evans. Sir Charles arrived just in time to be the first person to steo into the darkroom since the early expedition days. Ponting's trays| chemicals| and photographic paper were still to be found on the shelves and work benches. Mr Quartermain from DSIR's Antarctic Division - was then in charge of restoring the historic huts bordering on the Ross Sea.
