DescriptionAs pallets of equipment and supplies reach the end of the cargo ramp| the Hercules revs up its engines and moves forward several meters. The cargo drops off the ramp and into the snow| Led by a Christchurch mother| a small group of scientists is engaged on research projects in a special New Zealand ? United States Antarctic Programme| more than 1300km from Scott Base. The programme leader is Margaret Bradshaw| curator of geology at Canterbury Museum. This is New Zealand's first deep-field Antarctic research party to be led by a woman. Her party is less than 600km from the South Pole| working in the Ohio Range. A US Navy Hercules took the research group to the polar plateau. An earlier flight was prevents from landing by 50knot winds. The party comprised two New Zealanders and two Americans. The other New Zealander is Graeme Ayers| and Mt Cook national park ranger| engaged as a field leader by the Antarctic Division. The Americans are Lucy Force and Dr Karl Kellogg| sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Mrs Bradshaw| who has two children| is making her third visit to Antarctica. 'The Ohio Range is the only place in Antarctica where there are lots of marine fossils- some fish| some plants| and mainly shell fossils|' she said. The fossils are similar to fossils found by Mrs Bradshaw near Reefton five years ago. The party will be in the mountains until January. It took four tonnes of equipment and supplies with it. 26/11/79DepictsMargaret BradshawGraeme AyresLucy Force Karl KelloggPhotographerNigel S RobertsUnknownUnknownSeason1979-1980Date Taken1979-1980 Season1979-1980 SeasonOriginalPrintNo. People2-52-5LocationOhio RangeOhio Range
