Apprent-ICE Blog #2
We've had a very busy time so far at Scott Base - a lot has happened over the past week and it's been good fun ripping into the work in the HFC project. We have been fitting out shipping containers to house the food for the base while we work to demolish the existing freezers to expand the use of the HFC building.
Away from work, life on base has also been very hectic. We had a formal dinner last Saturday with CEO Peter Beggs and the board members. We have been over the hill to McMurdo to watch the ship come into port and also attended a science tour there.
Both of us were lucky enough to get a flight on the Southern Lakes Helicopter here to help retrieve some of the science equipment that is spread out over Ross iIsland and the Dry Valley areas. We saw amazing sites from the chopper out over Mt Erebus, the vastness of the dry valleys, and up close penguin encounters - another once in a life time opportunity we have been lucky enough to experience here on the ice!
On Friday we competed in the Ross Island Table Tennis Tournament, it was compulsory dress up( as with most social occasions at Scott Base). Wehad a great time getting to meet some friendly Americans…..unfortunately neither of us came out on top on the score board.
